Call for Papers
Volume 19.1 of Theatre Topics (March 2009)
A special issue on
Teaching African American Theatre

This special issue responds to the need often expressed across-the-board
by Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) members for an
accessible resource that provides helpful strategies, best practices, and
shared experiences related to teaching African American theatre in higher
education. In response to this need, Theatre Topics is soliciting
scholarly essays that range between twelve and twenty double-spaced pages
and that emphasize curriculum design and/or pedagogical approaches in the
classroom. Possible topics include:
1. How can professors approach politically charged plays within the
classroom while lessening tensions associated with racism and prejudice?
2. How do university professors produce a â€œblack playâ€ on a campus when
there are too few black student actors? Will nontraditional casting work?
3. How do professors teach â€œperiod playsâ€ â€" Harlem Renaissance, Black
Arts Movement among others â€" today and help contemporary students to
understand the politics of the times?
4. What would the ideal 10 or 15 week syllabus for â€œIntroduction to
African-American Theatreâ€ look like?
The deadline for submissions is 1 November 2008.
