The Second Spanish Republic, 80 years later - April 22-23, 2011full name / name of organization: Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Colorado-Boulder contact email: republic80after@gmail.com THE SECOND SPANISH REPUBLIC 80 YEARS LATER.
Coinciding with the eightieth anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic in Spain, this interdisciplinary conference seeks to produce a revision and a critical assessment of the Republic’s significance above and beyond its connections with the Spanish Civil War. A complex period that has raised numerous conflicting interpretations, the Second Republic remains a touchstone of the political, social and cultural development of modern Spain in the twenty-first century. Over the past eighty years, it has been transformed into a lieu de mémoire, a powerful symbol for numerous ideologies, and an historical heterotopy. Conference organizers seek abstracts for 20-minute papers dealing with one of the following four topics: politics, social issues, literature, and culture and the arts. We particularly welcome papers that address the Second Republic as a whole or that try to provide an overall interpretation of the main trends and tendencies at play during the period (as opposed to detailed studies of individual events, authors or works). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following aspects of the Second Republic: -Social Conflict and Class Struggle Please send a 300-word proposal and a brief C.V. to:
