CFP Topic: Global Disability Representation

Conference: South Atlantic Modern Language Association

Location/Date: Louisville, Kentucky; Nov. 7th-9th 2008

In recent decades, the field of disability studies has developed
innovative and politically-progressive research. Such studies examine a
wide variety of lived experience by researching ideas about disability in
terms of equality and ethics, among others. As of yet, a lot of this work
addresses how phenomena of disability are experienced and perceived in
American and Anglophone cultures. Aside of these precedents, there
remains much to be said about how bodies, identities and ability are
understood outside the U.S. context. This panel invites submissions that
consider how representation, such as literature, art, film and so forth,
speaks to ideas of disability around the world. Presentations from all
disciplines are welcome. To participate, send a 1-2 page abstract to
edachamb_at_indiana.edu. Electronic attachments are preferred. Please submit
abstracts by May 1st 2008. The conference's plenary speakers will be H.R.
Stoneback and Romulus Linney. The conference will be held at the Hyatt
Regency Louisville. For more info, visit:
