English Graduate Conference on Literature

Shakespeare:
Pedagogy, Scholarship, and Performance

April 14-15, 2011
University of Central Arkansas

When Ben Jonson wrote that William Shakespeare was “not of an age, but for all time,” he could not have realized the full impact of his words. Nearly 400 years after his death, the bard still mesmerizes us. We invite papers on any aspect of Shakespearean studies.

Though the conference theme centers on Shakespeare, we also welcome submissions on any topic related to all genres of literature, theory, culture, and film, as well as creative submissions of poetry, fiction, and drama.

250-word abstracts and/or panel proposals must be emailed by March 15, 2010 to net06001@uca.edu with “Conference Submission” in the subject line.

Keynote Speaker:
Jacqueline Vanhoutte, Associate Professor of English, University of North Texas
Dr. Vanhoutte earned a B.A. in English Literature from Carleton College and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. She has published a number of essays on early English drama and court culture; her most recent article, entitled “Elizabeth I as Stepmother,” appeared in ELR: English Literary Renaissance. Dr. Vanhoutte is also the author of Strange Communion: Motherland and Masculinity in Tudor Plays, Pamphlets, and Politics (University of Delaware Press, 2003) and co-author, with Laurel Amtower, of A Companion to Chaucer and His Contemporaries (Broadview, 2009). She is currently at work on a book about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan court, tentatively entitled ¬Age in Love: Shakespeare at the Court of Elizabeth I."

Guest Poet:
Greg Alan Brownderville is a native of Pumpkin Bend, Arkansas. Winner of the 2007 Porter Prize, Brownderville has published a substantial body of work in journals and magazines such as the Oxford American and Measure. Primarily a poet, Greg is also a folklorist and a writer of fiction, creative nonfiction, and literary criticism. His latest collection is Deep Down in the Delta.
