With Pens And Forks: A Frank Look At American Food Writing

Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association - Scripps College, Claremont, California (about thirty minutes east of Los Angeles, in the lovely town of Claremont, one of the real jewels of Southern California). Nov. 5 & Nov. 6, 2011

Considering the power of current food journalists, Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan, Americans have been trying to figure out ways to write about the plate for over a century. Considering the power of the food publishing industry, many voices are starting to influence the way that Americans cook, dine, and choose their foods.

This panel seeks to understand food authors and how they are connected and influence American cultural standards, which are often disconnected from mainstream food ideals. Possible paper topics are not limited to:

• Television Personalities and their cookbooks
• Food Scholars and their Philosophies
• The role of Food Writing in the Composition Pedagogy
• The influence of MFK Fisher and female foodies
• Cookbook writers and their craft
• The public and food media
And anything else that you are working on – that will be interesting!

Scholars, graduate students, foodies and others interested in the intersection of food and culture are encouraged to submit.

Deadline to submit: March 20, 2011

Presenters must join PAMLA for 2011 by May 1, 2011, and submit conference fees by September 15, 2011.
