Research Center "Littérature française XIXe-XXIe siècles" (University of Paris-Sorbonne) and the W. T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies (Vanderbilt University)

After 150 years of translation and criticism, Charles Baudelaire's work is no longer simply a classic in French literature but a monument of world literature. We thought it would be interesting to foster a reflection on this international dimension by focusing on translations of Baudelaire's works and criticism in Baudelairean studies. The conference that will be held on December 9 and 10, 2011 could thus approach the following questions: the poet's fortune in various parts of the world; the countless translations of Baudelaire's works; the relationship between art history and Baudelaire's art criticism; questions of race, gender, sexuality and empire in Baudelairean studies; the role of Baudelairean journals (L'Année Baudelaire, the Bulletin baudelairien, the Études baudelairiennes) and research centers (especially the W. T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies), as well as the great editing tradition of Baudelaire's work and/or the poet's presence in education programs in France and other countries.
