Call For Paper SPECS March 15, 2011 Deadline
Specs is a journal of contemporary culture and arts at Rollins College that aims to create sympathetic interfaces between artistic and critical practices.
The editors invite submissions of critical and/or creative work for the 4th volume on the theme of "kaleidoscopic point." A "kaleidoscopic point" is an intersection of two or more lines of reflection symmetry. We seek works of fiction, non-fiction, cultural criticism, artwork, poetry, and pieces that blur genre boundaries, reflect reality, and challenge the collective assumptions governing our experience. The editorial board consists of writers and academics from various fields. The editors are excited by specialty, an excess of detail, fragments, narratives, meta-narratives, and more. The editors are interested in works that examine contemporary culture and/or cross the critical/creative divide while investigating the kaleidoscopic effect—the constantly changing pattern created by contemporary people, places, and events.
Some points to examine the kaleidoscope effect:
-Gender / Genre
-Art_ / Visual / Textual / Digital
-The Body / Physical / Political / Conditional
-Cities_ Megalopolis/ Megapolis / Megaregion / Counter
-States_ Fugue / Florida /
-Nations_ Fast / Organizations /
-Regions_ Southeast / Northwest / All the Rest
-Streets_ Main Street / Lost Street / Easy Street
-Technology_ Cellular / Nano / Green
-Communities_ Planned / Virtual / Imaginary / Information
-Leisure_ Consumption / Expulsion / Waste
-Environment_ Manmade / Natural / Endangered / Information
-Spectacle_ Flash Mob / Screen / Mediated
This year specs is working in collaboration with the Florida Studies Initiative at Rollins to support the Alfred J. Hanna Symposium on Florida. The symposium shared the theme of kaleidoscopic point and celebrates critical inquiries that consider the people, places, and events rooted in Florida's cross cultural past and transnational reality. Selected submission to specs will be eligible for special invitation to participate in the Hanna Symposium on Florida held at Rollins.
