Intersections of Modernist Cinema and Literature. October 6-9, 2011, Modernist Studies Association Conference, SUNY Buffalo
This panel will explore how moving images and the written word became interwoven as the cinema of attractions transformed into a medium capable of challenging the novel's dominance of narrative. How did literature respond to the new modes of presentation that cinema offered? How did cinema accept and/or reject literary conventions? Papers for this panel could consider (but are not limited to) topics such as cinematic adaptation, writing cinematically, writing about cinema, poetry and cinema, literary conventions in cinema, authors as early screenwriters, literature and silent cinema, and early Hollywood novels.
