The Culture of Cities Centre, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, is pleased to announce our upcoming conference, Keeping Up: Enthusiasm, Anxiety and the Culture of Wellbeing, to be held June 23-26, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Globalization and technological innovations have created an unprecedented demand to keep up with what is new. The perceived advances related to socially organized processes in innovation make the retraining and mastery of new developments and knowledge a challenge that resonates through and across the major discourses of health. In health care in particular, this situation impinges on the patient, the medical professional and the medical system. We invite participants to engage the status of discourses on 'advances' in knowledge and the bearing of such enthusiasms on the culture of health, and to developments in the arts, sciences and information in everyday life.

Key words: medicine, suffering, culture

Abstracts are due March 31, 2011. For more information, please visit http://www.cultureofcities.ca/news/conference-call-papers
