full name / name of organization:
University of the Creative Arts

First Inaugural Post-Graduate Conference
Centre for Fashion, Design & Promotion, University of the Creative Arts
June 23rd, 2011
University for the Creative Arts, Epsom, Surrey, UK

The body and the nude have been at the centre point of history, humanities and arts for centuries. Manipulations of the human form are a reoccurring focus through natural and unnatural causes. Such ideas include natural deteoriating of the body through aging and illness, against the recent sociological media frenzy of cosmetic surgery and decoration of the skin.

This interdisciplinary conference will focus on both the male and female body and explore the themes across a range of disciplines. The focal point of research being taken from a theoretical stance, this conference encourages speakers from a broad range of both academic and creative backgrounds.
I would like to invite post-graduates across the disciplines to meet and
discuss their work in this field. Areas of research might include (but are
not limited to):

-The body and violence
-The body and voyeurism
-Self harm
-The aging body
-Politics and the body: cultural fashions
-Decorating the body: a) Body art
b) Tattooing
c) Make-up
-Body manipulation through: a) photography
b) music
-Body modification: cosmetic surgery
-Illness and body disfigurement
