Keynote Speaker: Scott Russell Sanders
The Indiana College English Association is pleased to announce Scott Russell Sanders as the keynote speaker for our 2011 conference. Sanders is a noted essayist and the author of more than 20 books, including his most recent A Conservationist Manifesto; A Private History of Awe; and Wilderness Plots: Tales About the Settlement of the American Land. Common themes in his work are the human place in nature, social justice, and the search for a spiritual path. He retired from Indiana University in 2009 as Distinguished Professor of English.

Submissions:
“Spiritus Loci” (spirit of place) is the 2011 conference theme. In this age of globalized information, communication, and consumption, we are interested in what it means to consider the spirit of a place.

Faculty and graduate students are invited to submit proposals for individual papers, panels, and creative readings on the conference theme or on related topics in the discipline of English, including, but not limited to:

Ecocriticism
Ecocomposition
“going green”
The idea of home
individual author works
nature writing
travel writing
religious discourse
distance learning
pedagogical considerations of place
curricular design
theoretical inquiries

All proposals should include your name, presentation title, university affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, and presentation technology you request. In addition:
• Individual critical proposals should include a 300-word abstract.
• Creative submissions should include a 300-word excerpt.
• Panel proposals should include the abstract for each individual presentation and a summary of the rationale for the panel.

Graduate Students’ Presentation Prize Competition: ICEA sponsors a competition with cash prizes for graduate students who compete and present at ICEA. Prizes will be awarded for best scholarly papers (first place $100, second place $50) and for best creative readings. Graduate students who plan to compete for these prizes must submit complete papers, along with the abstract. Please contact the conference coordinator for details.
