Sixth African American Literature Symposium

"Adapting the Text: Visual Adaptations of African American Literature"

North Carolina Central University's Department of English and Mass Communication will host its Sixth African American Literature Symposium on Thursday, November 10, 2011. This year's theme is "Adapting the Text: Visual Adaptations of African American Literature." This symposium will explore ways African American Literature has been depicted on television, on stage, and in film and the implications of "adapting" these texts.

Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Authenticity, Childhood, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Folklore, Drama, Diaspora, Hip Hop Studies, Intertextuality, Film/Television Studies, Memory, Postcolonial Studies, Protest, Pop Culture, Silencing, Slave Narratives, Voice, and Women's Studies

Graduate and creative submissions also welcomed.

Email a 300-word abstract and a brief CV to Dr. Wendy Rountree, North Carolina Central University, wrountree@nccu.edu by July 31, 2011. Participants whose papers have been accepted will be notified by August 15, 2011. Completed papers should be sent to Dr. Rountree by October 22, 2011.
