Rising to the Challenge: Proactive Work in Assessment

Because assessment is often an externally imposed and heavily standardized endeavor, we tend to see it as a burden, as a necessary evil or even as a real threat to good pedagogy. But some of us have responded proactively to assessment mandates, carefully analyzing the cultures of our programs and institutions and designing projects that respond both to local and to external needs. These assessments have thus resisted the "dumbing-down" effect that we often associate with assessment, instead enriching our local teaching and learning environments in tangible ways. This session is an opportunity for those who have done proactive work in assessment to share their successes and to discuss how others might adopt similar strategies to meet their own needs for assessment.
