Popular Culture and Activism

Mid-Atlantic Popular | American Culture Association
18th Annual Conference
Call for Papers 2007 MAPACA Conference
November 2-4, 2007
Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel Philadelphia

Proposals for papers, panels and round-tables are invited for the 2007
MAPACA conference in Philadelphia, PA. The conference offers a wide range of
research areas in Popular Culture and American Culture.

Popular Culture and Activism welcomes papers or presentations on the life of
activism in popular culture production. Whether historical or contemporary,
investigations into the role of activism in shaping popular culture or the
role of popular culture in shaping activism are encouraged.
Individuals or groups, working from within any ideological framework, which
have utilized popular media or sought to effect popular media may serve as a
guiding framework. Other issues to consider: how have activist groups been
viewed on college campuses? What kinds of activism is being done on college
campuses or in your local communities, and how does this work (re?)shape
popular culture?

Please send a one-page (250-300 word) email proposal to ALISON SMITH (Chair)
(feministwriter_at_hotmail.com) before June 15, 2007. Include a brief CV or bio
and any A/V needs. THERE SHOULD BE NO ATTACHMENTS—PLEASE SEND EVERYTHING IN
THE BODY OF ONE EMAIL.

Note: only slide projectors, carousels, screens and combined VCR/DVD players
with monitors are provided. Single papers, three or four person panels,
round-tables and alternative formats are encouraged. You may submit
proposals to more than one area, but you may present only ONE paper at the
conference. For more information (including descriptions of each area, how
to submit, and other conference-related material), please visit MAPACA
online newsletter, The Gazette, at www.mapacagazette.net.
