Call for Papers: "Publishing the First Monograph"

43rd Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
March 15-18, 2012
Rochester, New York, held at Hyatt Regency Rochester
Host Institution: St. John Fisher College
Keynote speaker: Jennifer Egan, 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner, A Visit from the Goon Squad

This is a roundtable panel that aims to demystify the process of preparing the first monograph, selecting a publisher, drafting a book proposal, handling reviewers' feedback, dealing with rejection, negotiating the contract, revising the monograph, and marketing it. Participants will deliver a short presentation (6-7 minutes), in which they will share with the audience their experiences, tips, suggestions, and advice on how they successfully published their first book. All participants must have published at least one monograph between 2003-2010. The panel welcomes proposals from panelists who work in various fields, languages, literatures, time periods, and disciplines Proposals will be evaluated on a first-come-first-served basis because, in addition to representing diverse literary disciplines and fields, the panel is interested in presenting monographs published by various publishers. Interested participants can e-mail their proposals (300-350 word) to Suha Kudsieh at: by September 30, 2011.

The e-mail should contain the following information:
- Name of participant
- E-mail address
- Publication details of the participant's monograph, such as: title, date of publication, and name of publisher.

The 43rd Annual Convention will feature approximately 360 sessions, as well as pre-conference workshops, dynamic speakers and cultural events. Details and the complete Call for Papers for the 2012 Convention will be posted on:

Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA session; however panelists can only present one paper (panel or seminar). Convention participants may present a paper at a panel and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable. Do not accept a slot if you may cancel to present on another session.

Presenters are expected to pay NeMLA's convention registration and membership fees before Dec. 2011. For more details, please check:
