The Postmodern Dandy (NeMLA, March 15-18, 2012; proposals due Sept. 30, 2011)
As recent scholarship like Monica Miller's of the black dandy has suggested, the history of dandyism is complicated by race, class, nationalism, and sexuality. This panel requests papers which challenge the boundaries of the dandy as 'modern' figure as well. Especially considering how issues such as race, class, nationalism and sexuality have altered our understanding of the figure/trope, has the dandy moved into the postmodern? How does postmodernism change representations of or interpretations of dandyism?
Papers for this panel may analyze dandy figures from contemporary culture: literature, film, visual art, etc.
