Travel Now and Then

All traditions in some sense recognize and celebrate traveling. Within a culture one listens to a plethora of voices that appreciate the act of traveling and also those that question. Yet humans know themselves moving about all the time. It all began when we moved to gather food, to escape from predators, and to satisfy curiosities but now we move for different reasons; for trade, leisure, and to assert freedom. People also travel driven by their religious convictions and are ready to make dangerous journeys. If some travel to educate themselves, some travel to influence others, and many others to enlighten the world as missionaries. Still others consider traveling as a rite of passage, an initiation, a transition, and an opportunity for soul searching. From traveling first out of necessity, then for religion, migration, emigration, commerce, enlightenment and finally for pleasure is recorded in a genre that enjoys the liberty of being fact and fiction
at the same time. Critical articles addressing but not limited to the following themes are invited for Oasis: An Annual Periodical of English language and Literature -
Travel as therapy; Travel as education; Travels to India; Ecology and Travel; Genre and Canon; Gender in Travel; Travel and Globalization; Travel and the Construction of the Other; Travel and Translation; Journalist Travels; Emigration and Exile; Graphic Representation of Travels (Photography, Painting); Travel as political
action; Identities in travel writing; Aesthetics and the politics of travel writing; Empire in travel writing.
