Call for paper: Panel on "Deaf Cinema in Asia" at Asian Cinema Studies Society Conference (HKU, Hong Kong, Mar 18-20,2012)

Deaf Cinema is emerging in the world. However the subject matter lacks scholarly attention. As the organizer of The Second Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival, I would like to form a panel to discuss the characteristics that constitute Deaf Cinema, especially in Asia. The papers could be on the representation of D/deaf and/or hard of hearing in mainstream cinema and the cultural politics of D/deaf identity in Asian Cinema.

The First Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival (HKIDFF)was successfully launched in 2010. Prior to the HKIDFF, there were some smaller film festivals dedicated to the D/deaf issues. After the First HKIDFF, Deaf communities across Asia have started to film their experience. For example, the Malaysian Deaf community started a filmmaking workshop in Summer 2011. In East Asian Cinema (Taiwanese Cinema, Korean Cinema and Japanese Cinema) and popular culture, there are portrayal of D/deaf persons in the films/ TV dramas as main characters. But the films/ dramas are not made by the D/deaf.

Besides I wish to invite volunteer to do sign interpretation (Hong Kong Sign Language/ International Sign Language) at the panel. So there would be signs of the Sign.

If you are interested in the panel on "Deaf Cinema in Asia", please send an email with your abstract and bio by Dec 25, 2012 to hkidff@hongkongdeaf.org
