The Queer Futures group welcomes papers taking a queer approach to the conference theme, ‘Mediating Performance’ but we are not limited to this theme. In line with our mission statement (below) we encourage papers across a broad range of topics relevant to queer performance and theories, for example:
• Queer performance practices in applied theatre
• Cabaret/queer burlesque
• Queer performance and health
• Homonormativity and queer performance
• The impact of queer theory/performance on the representation of women and lesbians on stage
• Global/local queer performance and resonances
• Queer arts festivals
• Queer performance and ethics
• Trans performance

IFTR/FIRT Queer Futures WG Mission Statement:
QUEER FUTURES directs its focus at queer performance in the broadest sense, and the range of theories that open up ways for us to analyse it. We would like to start a new dialogue about the place of queer performance in contemporary culture and address this through ideas such as intersectionality, affect theories, historiography, as well as recent gender and queer theories. We are interested in all sorts of performance: live art/performance art, cultural performance, theatres.
The Queer Futures WG plans an interim meeting in February in London. Details to follow soon, but please contact us if you are not on our mailing list and would like to be kept updated about the group’s activities. To submit your abstract to the Queer Futures Working Group:

Papers being presented in Working Groups for the 2012 Conference need to submit a 300 word (maximum) abstract through the general procedure and specify that you wish to be considered for the Queer Futures WG. You must be a member of IFTR/FIRT and you need to register at Cambridge Journals Online (CJO). Register on Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) at:

You also need to email a copy of your abstract to the working group convenors: alyson.campbell@brunel.ac.uk and f.walsh@qmul.ac.uk . You will be notified of your abstract’s status by 15 March 2012.
