MLA Boston 2013: South Asian Periodical Culturefull name / name of organization: Sheshalatha Reddy contact email: s_reddy71@yahoo.com This panel, sponsored by the South Asian Languages and Literatures discussion group, explores the history, development, and contemporary life of periodical culture on the South Asian subcontinent. Papers may address a range of topics including, but not limited to the following: representation and/or discourse: periodicals focused on literature and/or the arts; literature published within periodicals; the transformation of periodical culture with the growth of web-based media; the delineation of regional, linguistic, caste, class, or religious identities; readership and audience; the creation of “public spheres” or “imagined communities”; visuality in periodical culture (in the use of sketches, photographs, advertisements, etc.); the economics/politics of periodical culture; gender and periodical culture; periodical culture and the vernaculars and/or English; the transition from oral and/or scribal cultures to print cultures; and editorial theory.
