CALL FOR PAPERS
HEART’S DAY 2009

THE WORLD OF TONI MORRISON – A CELEBRATION OF HER LIFE AND WORKS

The Department of English at Howard University invites abstracts of
papers to be presented at its annual Heart’s Day celebration to be held
on the University’s main campus Friday, February 13, 2009. The Heart’s
Day Conference commemorates the work of African-American and Diasporic
writers and supports the endowment of the Sterling A. Brown Professorship.

This year, the Department celebrates writer Toni Morrison and her
numerous works. Of particular interest are presentations which seek to
address the manner in which place is utilized in Morrison’s fiction,
especially as place may be linked to narrative strategies or discourses
on race, gender, and nation, or as new settings/spaces are given form in
the body of her works. Beyond this special focus, abstracts will be
considered which address any aspect of Morrison’s works that elucidates
the privileged status of her oeuvre at millennium, including (but not
limited to) use of geography, chronology, narrative strategies, major
themes, social commentary, matters of race, class, gender, image or
identity, or her place in disciplines such as Women’s Studies or the
Humanities.

Abstracts of 250-300 words should be submitted by January10, 2009 to
english_at_howard.edu AND to mbremseth_at_howard.edu. Select proceedings of
the conference will possibly be published as a collection of essays or as
a special issue of a peer reviewed journal.
