CFP: Gothic Science Fiction (graduate) (UK) (1/31/07; 4/28/07)

Organised by the School of Creative Industries, Napier University, Edinburgh, UK.

This one-day conference looks to bring together graduate students and early career researchers to discuss science fiction with a gothic slant. We invite short (20 minute) paper proposals focusing on identifying, untangling, or savouring gothic elements in science fiction, both past and present, and across a range of media - written texts, film, graphic novels, and visual media are all invited.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Roger Luckhurst of Birkbeck, University of London. Dr Luckhurst has written classics in both gothic literary studies and science fiction studies; for example, he is the author of _The Angle Between Two Walls: Fiction of J.G. Ballard_, and is co-editor (with Sally Ledger) of _The Fin de Si├Ęcle: A Reader in Cultural History c.1880-1900_.

After the conference we hope to interest an academic science fiction journal or a publisher in a selected collection of the papers.

Proposals are welcomed on, but not limited to, the following topics and areas:

- gothic tropes in science fiction, both past and contemporary, and across a variety of media - written texts/film/graphic novels/visual media
- gothic, science-fiction, and feminism/ sexuality
- time, past/future, nostalgia in Gothic and/or SF
- spaces, buildings, ships, architecture in gothic and/or SF
- narrative structures
- psychoanalysis
- monsters, aliens, evolution, biotechnology
- Social/ political subversion
- science fiction of the fin-de-siecle and early twentieth century
- intersections between science fiction and the genre of traditional gothic
- new readings of gothic science fiction texts

We welcome individual submissions. Please email a 300 word abstract and a short (one page) C.V. by 31st January 2007, to s.wasson_at_napier.ac.uk. Please avoid attachments and send your proposal and biography within the body of the text. Alternatively, please post a paper copy to:
