CFP Representations of Shanghai: Film and Fiction (Boston, MA, March 21-24, 2013; DEADLINE September 30, 2012)full name / name of organization: Lisa Bernstein and Richard Schumaker, University of Maryland University College contact email: lbernstein@umuc.edu; rschumaker@umuc.edu Because of its unique historical and geopolitical situation -- major Asian port, economic target for Western and Eastern powers, and node for conflicts between nationalists and communists -- Shanghai has been the object of literary and cinematographic representation throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. This NeMLA panel will analyze, organize, and probe the representation of Shanghai by Asian, European, and American writers and filmmakers. Comparative approaches and reflections on cultural history are particularly welcomed. Format may range from traditional papers to multi-media presentations. Deadline: September 30, 2012 The 2013 Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) convention continues the Association's tradition of sharing innovative scholarship in an engaging and generative location. The 44th annual event will be held in historic Boston, Massachusetts, a city known for its national and maritime history, academic facilities and collections, vibrant art, theatre, and food scenes, and blend of architecture.
