Gender and Genre: Exploring Intersections in Women’s Life-Writing

Focusing on the intersections of gender and genre within autobiographical studies, this panel seeks to explore relationships among subjectivity, representation, and narration. The broad purpose of this panel is dedicated to life-writing as a field of study and how this genre benefits and/or limits an author’s textual play with his/her narrative gender identity. Our aim is gender and genre focused while inviting interdisciplinary connections and explorations of or references to specific texts and specific authors. Some questions to consider include, but are not limited to, the following: How does the selection of genre affect gender representation? How does the genre play into one’s reading of the text or one’s representation of the self? What are particular benefits or limitations of genre and/or gender when it comes to life-writing?

This panel is being organized by NeMLA’s Women’s and Gender Studies Caucus: http://nemla.org/community/caucuses/womens.html. Interested participants should submit 500-word abstracts and one-page CV to Rachel N. Spear, Vice President of NeMLA’s WGS Caucus ( wgsnemla@gmail.com ) by the September 30th deadline. Documents should be .pdf or .doc attachments, and the subject line of the email should read “2013 NeMLA Abstract.” Submissions should include the following information: name, affiliation, email, postal address, telephone number, A/V requirements (if any, note A/V has $10 handling fee), one-page CV, and abstract. Also, please direct any questions to that same email address.

The 2013 NeMLA convention continues the Association's tradition of sharing innovative scholarship in an engaging and generative location. The 44th annual event will be held in historic Boston, Massachusetts, a city known for its national and maritime history, academic facilities and collections, vibrant art, theatre, and food scenes, and blend of architecture. The Convention, located centrally near Boston Commons and the Theatre District at the Hyatt Regency, will include keynote and guest speakers, literary readings, film screenings, tours and workshops.

Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA session; however, panelists can only present one paper (panel or seminar).
