Panel: "The Problematics of Postfeminism" (March 2013--Chicago)full name / name of organization: Society for Cinema and Media Studies contact email: amanda.rossie@gmail.com CFP- Society for Cinema and Media Studies 2013 The Problematics of Postfeminism Representations of postfeminism have proven both popular and profitable in mainstream U.S. entertainment culture, and recently, many of these representations in popular culture focus on girlhood. Papers in this panel will explore these postfeminist representations of girlhood, thinking critically about the contradictions, inconsistencies, promises, and fantasies of postfeminist girlhood in all forms of popular media (i.e., film, television, blogs, web series, etc.). Consider one or more of the following questions: How do these representations expose the fractures in the postfeminist ideal or work to mask the problems with the ideology? How does postfeminism continue to cement its (white heterosexual able-bodied, mostly middle-class) ideal girl in spite of the proliferation of these representations? What is unique (or not) about this particular cultural moment that allows representations of postfeminist girlhood to flourish? Please submit 250-word abstracts to Amanda Rossie (amanda.rossie@gmail.com) no later than Friday August 24, 2012. You will be notified by August 27, 2012. cfp categories: film_and_television gender_studies_and_sexuality popular_culture
