In Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction (2012), Grace Dillon explains that Indigenous SF “is not so new—just overlooked.” She continues by writing that her anthology not only explores this strand of Native literature but “advocates that Indigenous authors should write more of it.” Indigenous SF utilizes generic conventions of Science Fiction to explore Native concerns. With this in mind, we are looking for both science fiction and speculative fiction for this creative writing panel. Native writers are particularly encouraged but being indigenous is not required. What is required is that the creative work be relevant to indigenous issues.
Listed below are some suggestions for possible themes but topics not included here are welcomed and encouraged:
● Indigenous scientific literacies and environmental sustainability
● Futuristic reconstructions of sovereignty
● Apocalyptic events from native perspectives
● Indigenous dystopias/utopias
● Time travel and slipstream
● Contact narratives
● Native technology
