Send proposals of no more than 250 words by January 25th, 2012 to me at dgreven@mailbox.sc.edu. Please see the next paragraph for a fuller description. The Nathaniel Hawthorne Society seeks proposals for a session on “Nature, Culture, and Gender in Hawthorne’s Work” at the American Literature Association conference in Boston May 23-26, 2013. The panel seeks to explore Hawthorne's thematization of a nature/culture split and to expand the terms of the split itself. How do ideologies of gender and sexuality, to begin with, intersect with the treatment of nature and culture in Hawthorne's work? Further topics might include Hawthorne's representation of the natural world within varied contexts such as classicism and mythohistorical tradition, science and anthropology, and the historical. Papers that are both sensitive to historical context and theoretically engaged will be especially welcome.
