From Elsie's plunge off a cliff in _Birth of a Nation_, to _The Catcher in the Rye_'s dream of shielding children from the danger of falling over "some crazy cliff," to the recent rhetoric of the "fiscal cliff" -- papers that analyze the use and manipulation of the prime image of crisis -- the cliff -- in American culture. 250-300 word abstracts + full contact information by January 20, noon.
