This discussion will focus on how works like Mandy Oxendine utilize the elements of gothic psychology to confound binary racial concepts and to create the mixed-race identity matrix at the foundation of his theory of the future American. Papers that address this topic or the way in which Chesnutt’s work reflect interdisciplinary engagement are strongly encouraged as are papers addressing this year’s theme, “Cultures, Contexts, Images, Texts: Making Meaning in Print, Digital, and Networked Worlds.” Please e-mail proposed paper abstracts of not more than 300 words along with a short biography of not more than 150 words to Rachel Smith or Darren Elzie (University of Memphis) at rlsmith5@memphis.edu or djelzie@memphis.edu. The deadline for submission is June 7, 2013. The Charles W. Chesnutt Association will host this panel discussion at the 2013 SAMLA Conference, which will be held at the Marriott Atlanta Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center in Atlanta, GA on November 8-10.
