The Journal of South Texas English Studies is now welcoming submissions for its Summer 2013 issue, themed “The Writer’s Experience.” Submission deadline: May 27 2013.

Readers often think of writers as special creatures who possess magical knowledge or are influenced by mystical muses hidden and inaccessible to everyone else. However, when asked to discuss the experience of writing, authors often respond with figurative comparisons: writing is like building a house, pulling teeth, pounding a wall, riding a wild horse, conducting an exorcism, throwing a lump of clay on a potter's wheel, performing surgery on yourself without anesthesia. Good writing doesn't just magically appear on paper. There is no secret. But there is a process.

Sandra Cisneros writes an introduction to The House on Mango Street: 25th Anniversary Edition titled “A House of My Own.” What Cisneros describes in this brief memoir is the woman she was at the beginning of her career, a woman who does her writing at the kitchen table because it’s the only room in the house with a heater. The woman that Cisneros writes about is “trying to live like a writer…making things up as she goes.” Echoing Virginia Woolf, Cisneros writes about “the room where she can be quiet and still and listen to the voices inside herself.” Cisneros asks about this woman, the woman she sees in photographs “Is she really a writer or is she only pretending to be a writer?” As Cisneros succinctly portrays, the writer’s experience, a perpetual work-in-progress, is filled with insecurities, passions, and beauty.

The editors of JOSTES are looking for scholarly articles between 5,000 and 8,000 words concerned with “the writer’s experience” as it relates to English Studies as a whole. We hope to explore this theme within the fields of literary criticism, composition, rhetoric, linguistics, and pedagogy. For this issue of JOSTES, we are also interested in scholarship that provides insight into the life of the author and/or literature on the life of the author. Topics for consideration in this issue include but are not limited to:

How does one live like a writer? Who can be classified as a writer? And most importantly, can we define the writer’s experience, which is often as tangible as it is elusive? What can literary works, from the past and today, reveal about the writer’s experience and the writing process? To what extent may composition instructors systematize the writing process? How can educators nurture and develop their students’ identity as writers? What linguistic choices do writers make when portraying regional, ethnic, socioeconomic, or gendered characterizations in fiction, and are those choices conscious ones or more instinctive? We believe this theme promises to elicit fascinating responses from our contributors.

We also would be interested scholarly articles that connect our theme of the writer’s experience to the enduring appeal of Jane Austen and/or the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice.

Furthermore, the journal accepts poetry and creative prose submissions that address a writer’s experience with epiphany, the Muses, first drafts, or any other possibility within the theme. Although all creative submissions will be considered, preference will be given to those related to the theme of this issue. We also accept reviews up to 500 words of scholarly, non-fiction, fiction, and poetry books. Preference will be given to book reviews of works that are related to the current issue’s theme, but we will consider other book reviews as well. See below for submission guidelines.

New changes have been introduced to the publishing guidelines of the Journal of South Texas English Studies. JOSTES does not accept simultaneous submissions. In addition, to encourage the influx of articles from linguistics and other related fields, the journal will now accept submissions according to the American Psychological Association (APA) format and style guidelines as well as MLA guidelines. We hope these changes will add to the quality and reputation of this publication.

JOSTES also seeks submissions of cover art that relates to the geographical area of our journal (South Texas) in some way: figuratively, literally, impressionistically, or conceptually. We accept artwork, photography, or graphic art, and it should reproduce well in small format.

Please note: all submissions, including scholarly articles, creative writing, book reviews, and cover artwork must be original work and not be under consideration elsewhere. As a reminder, we do not accept simultaneous submissions.

All articles must conform to our submission guidelines, which follow MLA 7th edition and APA 6th edition conventions. Additionally, please do not submit thesis or dissertation chapters that have not been edited to be published as stand-alone projects. If notes are needed, they should follow the paper in endnote form. Do not use Microsoft's automatic endnote feature – please see submission guidelines. A Works Cited or References page should be last.

JOSTES follows a blind editorial review policy, so submissions should include a cover letter with the title of work and author’s name. Author’s name should not appear on the work itself; rather, title of the work should appear in the header or footer in place of last name. Please format works with 1-inch margins on all sides, double spacing, and 12-point, Times New Roman font.

Poets can submit more than one poem, but the total length of all poems together cannot exceed 100 lines. Short fiction can be up to 5,000 words, flash fiction up to 1,000, flash-flash fiction up to 600 words, and creative non-fiction up to 3,000 words. We only accept creative work in English; any words in a foreign language must be translated in a note at end of creative work.
