In his 2002 essay “Work and Culture in American Studies,” Michael Denning argues for a theory of culture focusing on labor and labor processes, as opposed to focus on the analysis of the “means of communication dominated by the market and the state”. In this panel, we will investigate scenes of work, labor, class, and culture throughout American literature in light of Denning’s call for a theory of culture revolving around issues of labor. By June 25, 2013, please submit a 300-word abstract to Owen Cantrell, Georgia State University, at ocantrell1@gsu.edu.
