2013 Call for Papers "Activism in the 21st Century"

Essex County College's Africana Institute in partnership with ECC's Division of Humanities, and the Frances E.W. Harper Literary Society at the Newark Public Library.

The symposium will convene on Thursday, October 24, 2013 Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey.

The 2013 State of Black Writers symposium will examine "activism" as a continuing paradigm in the lives and writings of people of African descent. Writers from all academic disciplines, as well as those outside of academia, are invited to participate in this day-long symposium as we consider the state of activism in the African diaspora.

We make a special call to scholars who write and speak in French and/or Creole to submit papers in French and/or English. We look to convene one session in French/Creole. Writers of other languages are also open for consideration.

The proceedings from the symposium will be published.

Suggested topics include radicalism, slave resistance, community activism, independence movements, popular culture, human/civil rights, feminism/womanist movement, LGBT rights, immigration, poetry, fiction (including speculative/science fiction), music, technology and social media activism, cinema, the military, labor movements, politics, the judicial system, the "Occupy Movement," student activism, and other themes related to the keyword "activism."

Other topics and/or critical paradigms can include critical race theory, disability studies, or social entrepreneurialism as activism.
