The Cosmopolitan and the Postcolonial -- EACLALS 2014 (abstracts due 20 Aug 2013)
Call for proposals for a panel on "The Cosmopolitan and the Postcolonial" at EACLALS (Innsbruck, Austria, 14-18 April 2014).
The meeting of the European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies is dedicated to the topic "Uncommon Wealths: Riches and Realities." This panel wants to explore how recent discussions of the cosmopolitan, the precarious, and the convivial (by K.A. Appiah, J. Butler, and P. Gilroy) suggest a new direction for postcolonial studies in that they demand a global view that tries to move beyond historical power relations and avoids essentialized notions of culture and identity. How does such thinking impact the practice of writing about and teaching postcolonial literature? Both theoretical papers and readings of individual literary texts are welcome. Please submit 250-word abstracts and a 100-word bionote to Gerd.Bayer@fau.de.
