The 20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium will take place on March 6-8 in New York, NY 2014, hosted by NYU, CUNY Graduate Center and Columbia University. The theme is “money” (http://frenchconference2013.gatech.edu/CFP_NewYork_2014.pdf).

I am seeking to form a panel that will explore this theme in contemporary French hip-hop (or French popular music more generally). I am particularly interested in papers that explore the tensions between capitalism and artistic freedom; critiques of global financial crises in song; money/power/colonialism; and France as the second global market for hip-hop. Other ways of interpreting the conference theme are welcome.

Please send a proposal of 200-250 words by August 26 to
