CFP: Punk Music and Culture
35th Annual Southwest Popular and American Culture Conference
February 19-22, 2014
Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Punk is more than a mere musical styling; it’s a way of making sense of the world and one’s place in it. I am particularly interested in papers exploring the impact of location on the creation of punk in places such as 924 Gilman Street. I am also very interested in papers exploring Pussy Riot and the punk activism in Russia. Please also keep in mind the theme of this year’s conference, Popular and American Culture Studies: Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow, so I will also consider papers that explore the Punk in this way. I am also looking for punk papers that help establish a punk ethos or a way of contributing to punk projects—something that does more than merely analyzes punk, but rather seeks to establish a way of doing punk.
In keeping with this year’s theme of “Popular and American Culture Studies: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” we are particularly interested in papers that consider punk as an on-going phenomenon, but any paper dealing with punk music and culture will be considered.
