The Memphis Center at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN welcomes graduate students at all levels to submit proposals for its upcoming conference “From Civil War to Civil Rights: Race, Region and the Making of Public Memory,” to be held on February 28th and March 1st, 2014 in Memphis. The conference will feature a variety of esteemed scholars discussing the ways that the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the intervening years have shaped our understandings of race, region, “the South,” citizenship and American identity. Confirmed speakers include Ta-Neihisi Coates, Thavolia Glymph, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Kate Masur, and Timothy B. Tyson.
We will pay particular attention to issues of public memory, exploring the ways that these pivotal histories continue to inform our contemporary experiences. In a series of presentations and workshops, documentary screenings and musical performances, we will discuss how the journey from Civil War to Civil Rights continues to affect our understandings of the past, present and future.
We welcome individual submissions in these topics from graduate students in any discipline – non-traditional presentations are welcome. (Unfortunately, due to the structure of the conference, we cannot accept panel submissions or roundtables.) Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words (including a title) and be accompanied by a biographical statement of 50 words and all relevant contact information. Submissions are due by November 1st, 2013 and should be e-mailed to rhodescollege2014@gmail.com. Any questions about the conference or the requirements should be directed to Dr. Charles Hughes, the Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Memphis Center, at hughesc@rhodes.edu or 901-843-3411.
