We are proposing a panel "The Nation & Its Discontents" in the upcoming Association of Asian Studies Conference to be held at Singapore during July 17-19, 2014. The 'nation-state', as often been argued, is an overtly restrictive projection of a model derived from western European experience onto the non-West where it may not apply. While acknowledging that the idea of the 'nation' renders disjunctive temporalities, and multiple vernacular iterations, this panel seeks to understand the politico-cultural stakes in the exportation and reception of a 'foreign' model, and the voices silenced thereby.

We invite papers from a variety of disciplines, geographies and time periods. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

- historiography and identity politics
- memory, erasure, trauma, holocaust etc
- (il)legitimacy of the nation
- the nation and its fragments
- issues of political representation & identity politics
- alternate modernities, non-hegemonic sciences
- textual portrayals of exile, concepts of identity, theories & politics of marginality

Please send in a 250-word abstract plus a 50-word bio note toavishekray@trentu.ca by October 20, 2013. For details visit the conference website at: http://www.aas-in-asia.org/2014-Call-for-Proposals-Main.htm
