Emerging Scholars Panel – Religion and Theatre Focus Group
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2014 Conference
Scottsdale, AZ July 24-27, 2014
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Hotel
"Dream Acts: Performance as Refuge, Resistance and Renewal"
The Religion and Theatre Focus Group invites new scholars who have not yet presented at a major national conference to submit papers to its 2014 Emerging Scholars Panel. These papers will investigate how religion and performance engage with dreams and dreaming, particularly illustrating how dreaming inspires or is enacted through performance as refuge, resistance, and renewal. "Religion" and "performance" may both be conceived broadly, potentially including activist performance, spirituality, spiritual practice, religion as institution, and theology, as well as drama, performance art, and performativity.
The theme for the 2014 conference is "Dream Acts: Performance as Refuge, Resistance and Renewal." Accordingly, while all submissions are encouraged, we recommend submitting papers that address the conference theme in some way. Essays might consider topics related to the human capacity to dream, imagine, transform, and overcome. At the same time, the geopolitical landscape of Arizona offers a chance to reflect on our responsibilities as artists and educators to the land—the desert in particular--to the multiple histories it harbors, the spiritual invitation it offers, and to the next generation of artist/activist/citizens who have charged us with nurturing and shaping their dreams. How does performance engage spiritually with the landscape of desert (metaphorically or literally) to land performers or audiences in a place of renewal, refuge, or resistance?
For this conference, the Religion and Theatre Focus Group will only be accepting completed conference papers for consideration. Papers should be approximately 10 pages in length. Submissions will go through a blind vetting process; do not include your name or academic affiliation within the paper. Include a 200-word abstract and save the document file name in the following format: R&T ES [Title of your paper]. In the body of your email, include your name, affiliation, paper title, mailing address, phone number, email address, and short bio. Please specify what AV equipment you will require. You can find out more about ATHE at www.athe.org. We look forward to your submission!
Please send your paper and abstract as a single Word document (with the abstract on the first page by itself) by JANUARY 05, 2014 to firstname.lastname@example.org. Final decisions will be made by reviewers in early March. We look forward to your submission!
