ReFocus: The Films of Preston Sturges

From The Great McGinty (1940) to The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend (1949), among many other titles, few filmmakers created as unique a body of work in the United States as Preston Sturges (1898-1959), but few directors have been as critically overlooked in existing scholarly literature.

We are currently soliciting abstracts of approximately 100 words for essays to be included in a book-length anthology on Sturges to appear in 2015. Essays may focus on individual films, screenplays, or on themes and topics that pervade his films. These essays may also focus on Sturges's work in other media, such as theater and television.

The Films of Preston Sturges will be one of the first scholarly editions to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press in a new series of anthologies examining overlooked American film directors. Series editors are Robert Singer, Ph.D. and Gary D. Rhodes, Ph.D.

Essays included in the refereed anthology will be of approximately 5,000 to 8,000 words, referenced in Chicago endnote style.

Abstracts are due by Friday, November 1. Completed essays will be expected by June 1, 2014.

Please attach a curriculum vitae to your abstract, and email both to: Dr. Jeff Jaeckle ( and Dr. Sarah Kozloff (
