DREAM ACTS: Performance as Refuge, Resistance, and Renewal

Catholic Performance:
Acts that Resist / Renew the Institution of the Catholic Church

From performances as diverse as Sister Act, Altar Boyz, and John Patrick Shanley's Doubt to the current Broadway production of Colm Tóibín's Testament of Mary, Catholic theatre has dared to resist and dreamed to reimagine the role of faith and belief for today's audiences. At times resisting the dogmatic and doctrinaire positions of the Catholic Church while at other points offering faithful refuge for the weary soul, the scholarship on contemporary Catholic theatre itself has proven a desert, with very little recently in the way of scholarship (excepting Kevin Wetmore's 2010 Catholic Theatre and Drama: Critical Essays).

This panel will highlight the ways in which 20th and 21st century theatre and performance have confronted questions on sexuality, justice, and civil and health rights all in light of the traditions, teachings, and trappings of the Catholic Church. We especially welcome papers that examine important contributions to the landscape of American drama / performance studies, while keeping the definition of "America" open to the northern and southern hemispheres. A myriad of topic exploration is welcome - from performance art, ritual, and activist protest to traditional drama.

Other potential topics may include:
-How does one direct / act Catholic performance today?
-What directions remain unexplored in dreaming a future for Catholic performance?
-What differentiates Catholic performance from standard performance?
-What new questions or methodologies may be brought to bear upon Catholic performance?
-How does one incorporate Catholicism into a larger performance?

While we encourage theoretical application, papers that are historical in nature are also welcome. This panel will be sponsored by the Religion and Theatre Focus Group.
