Unlikely: Journal for the Centre of Creative Arts, special issue FERAL 8th January 2014 (April/May 2014)
Unlikely: Journal of the Centre for Creative Arts calls for submissions for inaugural issue, Feral.
Submissions due: 8th January, 2014
Publication: April/May 2014
Unlikely is an international, transdisciplinary journal, based at the Centre for Creative Arts, La Trobe University, Melbourne. The journal fosters conversations across mediums and disciplines, between artists working in practice-led research and a range of scholars engaged with a common theme. Each issue is preceded by a live event, around that issue's theme, from which creative artists also submit work for peer-review. Unlikely supports innovative developments in practice-led research in the academy as well as providing a forum for transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary engagements with a specific theme. It is peer-reviewed and open-access.
The issue – Feral
We are currently seeking scholarly contributions for the April/May 2014 issue of Unlikely, with the theme of Feral. These contributions will complement and extend the Centre for Creative Arts' live event (Melbourne, December 2013).
Ferals are exemplary posthumanist things, the trace of their domestication-gone-wild putting pressure on nature/culture. Undisciplined, disorderly, and extravagant, ferals disrupt and rewrite practices, places, and cultures. They are both above and beneath familiarity – un-homely, unstable, uncanny. We seek papers that: analyse the figure of the feral in art or culture (whether ferals are biota, ideas, machines, hybrids, texts); explore the practice of ferality, that are or do 'feral'; theorise ferality, perhaps in posthumanist terms; and/or are pollinated by all these categories.
Submissions should be in English, between 5000-7000 words (including abstract and works cited), in MLA format. All submissions should be sent as a doc(x) file, with a short biographical note (<100 words) to both:
For experimental and/or audio-visual submissions, please contact the editors to discuss suitable word-length and file format. All works will be peer-reviewed before publication, and you will be notified by email of the outcome. Unlikely does not charge a fee for publication.
