The Spirits of the Age: Power, Place, & Public House in the 18th-Century, CFP DEADLINE: NOV 30TH
The 2014 meeting of the South-Central Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies will take place on Galveston Island on February 13-15. The overall theme for the meeting is "Energy." Spirits could be said to fuel the life and literature of the age. This panel invites papers which address any aspect of the "spirits" of the age. In addition to papers that might examine 18th-century brews, brewing, or distilling, other possible avenues of exploration could include the representation of "spirits" in literature, art, or music; the relationship between "spirits" and economy; the role of "spirits" in commerce, piracy, war, medicine, etc.; uses of "spirits;" or the role or development of the public house in providing a location for any of the above.
