Panel # 1 - Re-presentations of the Body: Space and Place in the Latin@ Imaginary.

Chair: Dr. C. Christina Lam, LaGuardia Community College

This panel seeks to investigate the ways in which the body is represented in Latina/o literature? What are the intersections between the material body, the body politic and the corpus of Latina/o literature? How do Latina/o authors re-present the Latina/o body in ways that recover their neglected historical memories and position them as valued members of the body politic in the U.S.?

Please submit a one-page abstract and short vita with contact information to Christina Lam at Clam@lagcc.cuny.edu no later than 11/22/13.

Panel # 2 – Teaching Latina/o Studies: Learning from Experience

Chair: Dr. C. Christina Lam, LaGuardia Community College

In her seminal work Learning from Experience Paula Moya argues for an expanded notion of literacy that asks us to consider how reading and material experiences are interconnected. In our own work as Latina/o scholars we are confronted with the different ways of knowing our student bring to the classroom. This panel seeks to investigate how we as scholars find ways to connect our students’ experiences with the texts we ask them to consider in the classroom. What kinds of pedagogical exercises have you found most effective? What are some of the ways we can encourage our students to re-present themselves even as we seek to recover the Latina/o corpus of writing? What can we learn from experience?

Please submit a one-page abstract and short vita with contact information to Christina Lam at Clam@lagcc.cuny.edu no later than 11/22/13.
