Proposed panel for the 2014 Screen Studies conference, University of Glasgow, 27-29 June 2014

“Dynamics of Body and Environment”

This panel seeks paper proposals for a pre-formed panel submission to the 2014 Screen Studies Conference (Conference theme: Landscape and Environment, see the Screen Studies website for more detail; deadline: Friday 10 January 2014). The panel participants will be expected to work together prior to the conference to develop the ideas of individual papers into a cohesive final product.

The organisers of the panel, Ian Murphy and Jill Murphy, welcome proposals for papers that effectively locate theoretical questions of corporeality and embodiment within the broader conference theme of Landscape and Environment. The panel aims to examine films in which the protagonist’s psychic and bodily experience is reflected through a formal concern with the surface, texture and detail of external environments. As such, we are particularly open (but not limited) to papers on films that stage unusual relationships between the human body and:
- Aqueous, forested or industrial environments
- Architectural landscapes and structures
- Objects within the environment
- Issues of ‘natural’ landscapes vs. decorated studio sets

Please send proposals of no more than 200 words to Ian Murphy (ian.alphaville@gmail.com) and Jill Murphy (jill.alphaville@gmail.com) no later than Sunday 5 January 2014 for consideration. Please also ensure your availability to collaborate on the themed panel submission abstract at short notice.
