This panel seeks papers about the significance of weather and/or climate in modern literature. Open to a wide range of topics (including American, British, and world literatures) and approaches. Submissions might address (but certainly are not limited to):

• The depiction of weather/climate in traditional and avant-garde forms.
• The construction of weather/climate as a specific interest of modernity.
• The importance of predicting and/or forecasting weather.
• Major climatological/meteorological events (e.g., the American Dust Bowl).
• The relation of weather/climate to race, gender, and class formations.
• Ecocritical approaches to modernist literature.
• The connection between weather/climate and genre.
• The differing appearances of relative stability (climate) and unpredictability (weather).
• The links between weather/climate and other modernist themes.

The 2014 SCMLA Annual Convention will be held October 18-22 in Austin, TX. Abstracts for the "Modernist Weather" session should be 200-250 words and must be submitted via email attachment by February 21. Please email submissions to dcolson@emporia.edu
