On the Borders of Aesthetics

This seminar explores intersections, oppositions, and confrontations that lie at the borders of
aesthetic theory — that is, moments in which the local disciplines, movements, concepts, and
institutions that lie on the peripheries of aesthetics come to exert pressure on and challenge its
classical conceptions. How does aesthetics come under pressure from movements and concepts
on its borders? When, why, and how does aesthetic theory rethink and revaluate its own contours
in response to pressures that lie at its own peripheries and that intersect or intercept its very
own claims? Papers are welcome that engage classic or contemporary accounts of aesthetics and
aesthetic theory as well as accounts of literary texts that engage the questions and concerns that
traditionally inhabit the aesthetic tradition.
