Call for Papers
The Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh project invites submissions for 20-minute papers to its international conference, to be held in Leicester, England, from 24-26 April 2015.
The conference celebrates Oxford University Press’ new edition of Waugh’s works, which is overseen by Evelyn’s grandson Alexander Waugh and co-edited by Professors Martin Stannard (Leicester) and David Bradshaw (Oxford). This new edition will include novels, essays, biographies, and all Waugh's personal writings and art work. Research for the project is funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council. Publishing will begin with some of Waugh's best-loved works in 2016, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the author's death.
The project will be welcoming the world’s leading Waugh scholars, publishers and creative practitioners to Leicester and the conference will be addressed by:
Selina Hastings, author of the bestselling biography Evelyn Waugh (http://www.selinahastings.com/)
William Boyd, screenwriter for Scoop and Sword of Honour (http://www.williamboyd.co.uk/films)
Paula Byrne, author of Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brideshead (http://www.paulabyrne.com/Evelyn_Waugh.php)
The conference will also feature talks and workshops on the challenges associated with editing large collections (Jacqueline Baker, OUP) and examine how digital humanities technology can be employed to tackle them.
We welcome papers on any aspect of Evelyn Waugh studies and/or editorial practice, and offer the following five themes as potential avenues of enquiry:
Please send abstracts of no more than 250 words to Dr Barbara Cooke (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Friday 27th June 2014.
