Reminder: Imitatio Christ in Early Modern English Literature at Kalamazoo 2015
Session Title: Imitatio Christi in Early Modern English Literature
Session Organizers: Patricia Taylor and Nandra Perry
The importance of the imitation of Christ in late medieval English devotional culture has received a great deal of critical attention. This panel seeks to extend the discussion of imitatio Christi to the early modern period. We seek papers on the various afterlives of both Thomas á Kempis and on other forms of the imitatio Christi devotional paradigm in post-reformation England. We are particularly interested in topics that explore continuities and discontinuities between late medieval and early modern religious culture, Catholic and Protestant devotional models, and religious and literary formulations of "good" imitatio.
To this end, we invite papers on topics such as:
--reception and dissemination of Thomas á Kempis' The Imitation of Christ
--Catholic and Protestant versions/visions of imitatio Christi
--late medieval and early modern martyrs texts
--humanism and imitatio Christi
--imitation of Christ and sacraments
--late medieval and early modern incarnational theology and poetics
To propose a paper, please submit a 250-300 word abstract and a completed participant information form (found here: http://www.wmich.edu/medieval/congress/submissions/#PIF) by September 15th, 2014. Submissions should be sent as attachments to Patricia Taylor (email@example.com) with "Imitatio Christi Kzoo2015" in the subject line. Feel free to contact Patricia Taylor with questions about the session.
