The Department of Humanities at Paine College is requesting proposals for the 18th Annual Conference on the Harlem Renaissance to be held on the campus of historic Paine College.

The theme for 2014: Great Migrations and Global Discourses: An Interdisciplinary Examination of the Harlem Renaissance Era at Home and Abroad.

The focus for presentations will center on the literature, history, philosophy, art, and music, as well as inter- and cross-disciplinary approaches from the social and political sciences, economics, and STEM.

Possible areas of inquiry include but are not limited to:
• literary and historical (trans)migration narratives—oral and written
• Renaissance sites and salons in Harlem; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; etc.
• lives and literatures of emigrants, expatriates, and exiles
• global impact of art, music, and/or drama influences on and from Harlem
• religious discourses in Harlem and abroad
• local, regional, international impact of Black entrepreneurism
• Modernism, Nationalism, and/or Pan-Africanism
• Negritude art and politics
• Medicine – advances and inequalities during the Era
• psychological and/or sociological impact of Black self-determination
• lynching and racial violence home and abroad
Proposals/Abstracts are sought in three categories:
• Professors, independent scholars, community organizers, artists, and entrepreneurs
• Graduate students
• Undergraduate students

Submission Requirements: Individual proposals/abstracts should be no more than 250 words and panel abstracts should be no more than 750 words. A clear explanation of the significance of the presentation is requested. Indicate all participants, status of each participant (professor, independent scholar, organizer, artist, entrepreneur, or student) and tentative title/focus of the panel and/or individual presentation.
