CFP: Anime: Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki (6/15/04; collection)full name / name of organization: wndrkn_at_rcn.com contact email: wndrkn@rcn.com CFP: Book Proposal for Japanese Animation: Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Studio Ghibli With the explosion of anime imported into American book, television, and film industries, this book offers the opportunity for scholars to consider the impressive and popular appeal of films produced through the Japanese animation studio, Ghibli. At the forefront is Hayao Miyazaki, who most recently has received international acclaim in both the United States (an Oscar for best animated film -- 2003) and in Germany (tied for the Golden Bear -- 2003) for his work, Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi). However, Miyazaki has been for many years a critical and economic success both in his native Japan as well as in other Asian countries. In addition, with the release of many of his animated works in the United States through a highly publicized distribution deal with Disney, there is rising interest in discussing his body of work. Scholarly discussion of these films is much needed because Studio Ghibli films, through their stunning animated scenes of flight and wonder n! I invite submissions on any film (or text) produced by this Studio from a variety of methodological approaches (sociological, literary, film studies, cultural studies, Asian studies, etc.). Articles should be 6500-7500 words long and include what and how many illustrations will be needed.
